books business growth mindset reading Jul 08, 2025
A new blog post with Deborah's top 10 recommendations for books to read this Summer that will support your growth, fuel your mindset, your soul and help you make sales!

Summer is for slowing down, soaking up the sun — and feeding your mind with ideas that light a fire under your dreams.

One thing that always helps me slow down and come back to myself? A good book.

The real kind, with pages I can flip through, underline, and dog-ear.

I’ve pulled together this Summer Reading List with soul, strategy, and even a sprinkle of AI. Some of these books are practical, some spiritual, and some will open your eyes to what’s possible when you stop fearing the future and start creating it.

Pick one, savor it, and see what shifts for you.
Here’s to your summer of soul-led growth! 🌞📚

The Full List

Here’s what’s on my shelf this season — with a quick peek at what you’ll get from each:

📚 The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
A timeless fable about trusting the whispers of your heart and finding treasure where you least expect it. (see my deeper drop-in below)

✨ It’s Time to Give a FECK by Chaz Ebert

Chaz is out to share a powerful message with the world about how to lead with kindness and forgiveness. My older sister Stacy gave me this book. She is a professional publicist and works with a lot of A-list and celeb clients -  Chaz being one of them. Chaz is an African American woman who was married to famed movie critic Roger Ebert, and this book details their journey to overcome racial struggles they faced as a married couple and how that can apply to all relationships. She leans in hard to how we desperately need more empathy in the world. It's a beautiful guide to leading with Forgiveness, Empathy, Compassion, and Kindness.

💸 Financial Feminist by Tori Dunlap
A clear, empowering take on money for women who want to spend, save, and invest on their own terms. If you’re not already following Tori this is your sign to find her and follow and read this book! Tori offers No-nonsense money talk for women who want to reframe their relationships with money so it's less struggle, more freedom and the practices are in alignment with their values.

🌙 Manifesting Made Easy by Jen Mazer
Jen is an old friend of mine who I've known since back in the early Brooklyn days when we were both involved with the music and arts culture in our neighborhood. She's since launched a career in helping people embrace manifestation. I love this book because it offers a simple, soulful primer on turning your dreams into reality — without the spiritual overwhelm. Expect simple practical steps that turn the "woo" into truly living your dream life.

🎯 The ONE Thing by Gary Keller
A practical reminder that focus beats hustle every time — clarity on what matters most changes everything. (see my deeper drop-in below)

🧩 Atomic Habits by James Clear

This is my bible. In fact - I built my entire nutrition coaching program on this premise of daily atomic healthy habits. The main concept is that your tiny daily actions shape your big life — this shows you how to make them stick. It’s got the science and data that I need to motivate me plus the page-turning story telling that dials it in. It’s so good - business owners, please read this.

🔥 Untamed by Glennon Doyle
Glennon Doyle’s raw, powerful invitation to break the rules, trust your wild self, and live uncaged. This collection of short stories reads like a manifesto wrapped in a wildly addictive memoir. It’s a page turner and there are Holy Shit wow moments on every page. Women - must read.

🧠 Mindset by Carol S. Dweck

This classic is for those of us who understand that we get to choose how we perceive situations and want to understand taht better. It details the difference between fixed vs. growth mindset — and why it unlocks so much possibility.

🕵️‍♀️ Incognito by David Eagleman
I picked this one up after my mom had her stroke and we’ve been learning so much about neurology and the power of the brain. A peek inside your unconscious brain — you’re not as in control as you think (and that’s okay!). But also - it’s a fascinating guide to how you can continue to build neural pathways and grow and strengthen your supercomputer of a brain even as you age.

🤖 The Alignment Problem by Brian Christian
A clear-eyed, human take on what happens when AI systems don’t line up with our human values — and why that matters for all of us. (see my deeper drop-in below)

🙌 Year of YES by Shonda Rhimes

If you’ve ever needed permission to say “YES” to your own life — this book will hand it to you, wrapped in Shonda’s brilliant, funny, and deeply human storytelling. Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, built an empire with her words — but behind the scenes, she was the ultimate introvert, saying no to almost everything that scared her. Year of Yes is the story of what happened when she challenged herself to say YES for one whole year: to invitations, adventures, uncomfortable conversations, and putting herself in the spotlight in ways that cracked her wide open. It’s warm, honest, and will make you ask: Where have I been hiding behind “no” when my whole life is waiting for a YES?

🌟 A Few Standouts I Want to Highlight

While I love this whole stack, here are three I’m especially leaning into this summer:

🤖 The Alignment Problem by Brian Christian

I haven’t finished this one yet — but it’s at the top of my stack for many reasons. I was looking for a book on the impact of AI, because I have started to use it in daily practical ways, and I don’t know enough about the bigger picture. I want to be educated about the real impact of my actions as I adapt AI into my work. Not just for me — but for how I help my clients build simple, sustainable systems too.

This book digs into the wild world of AI — not the sci-fi robots, but the real machine learning systems we’re already using every day. It explores what happens when the algorithms we build don’t actually line up with our human values — like fairness, safety, or bias — and the ripple effect that has on everything from hiring to self-driving cars. It’s part storytelling, part warning, part hopeful look at the researchers working to fix these issues before we take our hands completely off the wheel. If you want a clear, eye-opening peek at what’s really happening under the hood of AI — and why it matters for all of us — this is your read.

If you’re curious about the ethics, the pitfalls, and the people trying to get this right, give this one a read.

📚 The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

This is my all-time favorite book — the one I recommend over and over because every time you read it, you’ll see something new about yourself. The Alchemist is part fable, part gentle reminder that you can trust your path, even when it doesn’t look logical on paper. It’s about listening to your heart, noticing the signs the universe keeps sending you, and having the courage to take steps that don’t always “make sense” to other people — or even to you in the moment. If you’re standing at a crossroads in your life or business, this story will feel like a trusted friend whispering, “Keep going — it’s worth it.”

🎯 The ONE Thing by Gary Keller

This is one of those books I come back to every time I feel scattered or pulled in too many directions — which, let’s be honest, is all the time when you’re an entrepreneur. The big idea? When you focus your energy on just one clear, meaningful thing — the thing that truly moves the needle — everything else gets lighter. Simpler. Less stressful. It’s a practical guide to cutting through overwhelm, setting real priorities, and giving yourself permission to do less, but better. If you ever feel like you’re spinning your wheels or drowning in a never-ending to-do list, this book will feel like a breath of fresh air.
