In all of my coaching programs, I choose an approach to dietary lifestyle called the "Crowding Out" theory. This simple mindset shift helps us by adding an abundance of foods in to our diet and lifestyle that your body will love and learn to crave.Â
In general, the foods we will embrace during the cleanse week include:Â
- Coconut water: This drink is often considered nature’s Gatorade, providing essential electrolytes to hydrate from the inside out. If you don’t love the taste, feel free to dilute it with water.
- Fresh herbs, especially cilantro, are know for it’s detoxifying abilities, particularly chelating heavy metals. Mint is wonderful for bloating and relaxation.Â
- Fruit is a wonderful natural sweetener and contains fiber, which helps slow down the absorption of the sugar into your blood stream. Fruit contains essential vitamins, minerals and supports hydration.
- Ginger is an inflammation fighter, brings warmth and energy to the digestive system and calms the stomach.
- Healthy fats are used by the body as a source of fuel to stimulate metabolism and also help your body absorb all the awesome nutrients you’re consuming.
- Leafy greens contain phytonutrients and fiber that are great for digestion. They also help cleanse your body and keep your liver happy and healthy.
- Nuts and seeds are high in protein, healthy fats, calcium, iron and magnesium.
- Vegetables are packed with fiber, low in sugar and contain essential vitamins and minerals. They taste great seasoned with herbs, spices and sauces.

What foods do we avoid?
As hard as the elimination part of a cleanse may be, it’s also quite rewarding. Over time, your body becomes reliant on these things to get you through the morning, your 3 pm slump, or help you unwind at the end of the day. So naturally, when you abstain, you’ll experience some withdrawal symptoms usually around the second or third day of the cleanse. Promise, it’s absolutely worth it when your energy levels rise, sleep quality improves and digestive system heals.
Here’s what we remove and why…
- Processed Foods: Processed foods offer close to zero nutrients and can also come packed with chemicals and other artificial acidic substances that soak up nutrients from our bones and cells. They also put our kidneys and liver through the wringer.
- Caffeine: Caffeine can have a negative effect on your sleep, stress levels, adrenal glands, your gut and your nervous system. If you drink coffee, we can ease off a bit by consuming green tea or mushroom coffee, or even trying a decaf version of your favorite cup. Sodas and caffeinated soft drinks are a no for this cleanse. The artificial additives and sweeteners in soda are also neurotoxins and have been linked to bone loss — yikes!
- Alcohol: Did you know alcohol wreaks havoc on your body’s natural blood sugar regulation, which stimulates cravings for sugar and carbohydrates? It also interferes with nutrient absorption and is toxic to the liver. For the week of the cleanse, we'll trade in our cocktails for "mocktails" and tonics that support immune and liver function!
- Soy: To be clear, small amounts of organic, non- GMO soy like miso or tamari are a-ok during the cleanse. In general, highly processed soy products can interfere with nutrient absorption and leach nutrients from your body so for this cleanse, we categorize them as "processed" and replace them with whole food sources of protein such as lentils.
- Meats: While meat is often presented as “part of a complete meal,” it’s highly acidic and can take up to four full days to get through your digestive system. This cleanse is full of fast-moving and easy-going foods, which is why our cleanse is 100% plant-based recipes.
Over the course of the cleanse week, you’ll be fueling your body with a range of fiber-rich vegetables (seasoned like a pro chef!), fresh fruits, nuts and seeds, and drinking down a whole bunch of water, green smoothies, and herbal teas to help your body flush out those toxins.
